Engineering
The Engineering Department plays a crucial role in our town by offering technical expertise, engineering assistance, and overseeing contracts for multiple municipal departments. Its core duties encompass several key areas, including:
- Manual of Specifications, Standards, and Design (MSSD): The department is responsible for the creation and upkeep of the MSSD, ensuring that it adheres to the highest engineering standards.
- Capital Improvement Projects: Managing every aspect of Capital Improvement Projects, from initial design and permitting to the bidding process, awarding contracts and overseeing construction administration.
- New Development Infrastructure: The Engineering Department diligently assesses, inspects and accepts newly developed infrastructure to ensure it aligns with town specifications.
- Stormwater Management and Erosion Control: The department also maintains effective stormwater management systems and implementing erosion and sediment control measures.

Clayton on the Move
The Clayton Comprehensive Transportation Plan – Clayton on the Move – will identify the Town’s long-term vision for the local transportation network, including roadways, public transit, and bicycle and pedestrian facilities. This state-required plan will provide recommendations that the N.C. Department of Transportation will consider for future project funding and development.
